PROBA2 witnesses an annular eclipse

People across Africa and Asia marvelled at the solar eclipse that took place on 15 January. At the same time it was being recorded from orbit – by ESA's Sun-watching PROBA2. The small satellite is demonstrating new space technologies but also hosts scientific instruments to monitor the Sun and space weather. PROBA2's SWAP (Sun Watcher using APS detectors and imaging processing) instrument acquired the images used to produce this animation. Contest: Spot PROBA2 in the sky Who will be able to spot PROBA2 and put it on a movie or picture? The Rockot will be launched at 02:50:51 Belgian time. The separation of PROBA2 from the last stage of the spacecraft takes place in the morning at 05:50:06 Belgian time. Soon afterwards, the satellite will fly over Europe and radio-contact from Redu will be made. Some preliminary estimates on the orbit are available. Launch PROBA2 Eyes focused on the Sun and space weather November 2, 2009, will be a red-letter day for the Belgian space industry and space sciences. A rocket containing PROBA2 will be fired off at 02:50 Belgian time from a Russian launch base in Plesetsk. PROBA2 will be the first ESA space weather mission dedicated to observing the Sun.
