LYRA temperature evolution

Correction of filter degradation

From the very first hours after the covers had been opened, LYRA faced a severe degradation; in some channels of the nominal unit, the signal fell by 30-50% within the first month alone. At stabilization, the loss in those channels reaches 99%. Therefore, it was not possible in the long range to compare and calibrate LYRA with other instruments without taking the degradation into account. Substraction of dark current

For some channels, the dark currents are highly dependent on the on-board temperature, which in turn changes with the spacecraft's orbit around the Earth, with the distance to the Sun, and with the operations of other instruments. Four eclipses in one day

On July 11, 2010, SWAP and LYRA registered four partial solar obscurations, during the times PROBA2 crossed the lunar shadow path. On July 11, a total solar eclipse could be seen on the Easter Islands. From the dawn-dusk orbit in which PROBA2 resides, the totality could not be seen, but the spacecraft did cross the lunar shadow path four times. In 2005, a Science Consortium for SWAP and LYRA was set up as an international ISSI team that takes care of the international coordination of the SWAP and LYRA science operations. During 5 meetings with an international team of 30 scientists of 10 different countries, the scientific opportunities for SWAP and LYRA were defined and PROBA2 grew from a purely technological mission to a 'Nationally Led' ESA science mission. LYRA is a solar X and UV filter photometer, designed and manufactured by a Belgian–Swiss consortium. It monitors the solar irradiance in four passbands relevant to Solar Physics, Space Weather and Aeronomy: the 120-123 nm Lyman-αlpha channel, the 190-222 nm Herzberg continuum channel, the Aluminium filter channel (17-80 nm + a contribution below 5 nm), including the strong He II at 30.4 nm, and the Zirconium filter channel (6-20 nm + a contribution below 2 nm), rejecting He II. The SWAP telescope (Sun Watcher using Active Pixel System detector and Image Processing) has been developed as part of the PROBA2 payload. SWAP is directly derived from the concept of the EIT telescope that we developed in the '90s for the SOHO mission. SWAP provides images of the solar corona at a temperature of roughly 1 million degrees, with a cadence of 1 image per 1-2 minutes, and field of view (FOV) of 54 arcmin. In general, SWAP is acquiring non-stop EUV images with a cadence between 1 and 4 minutes. LYRA's nominal programme produces timelines for the 4 channels of unit 2 at 50ms cadence. From time to time, special science (or calibration) campaigns are run. For the moment, the easiest way to find out about science campaigns with SWAP and LYRA, is to consult the appropriate Google Calendar.
